Coop was used to being picked last in sports. He was smaller than his classmates and probably needed glasses. Regardless, he was just happy to play. His family did not have a lot of money and watching professional sports was a luxury. His mother told him that on his birthday she would take him across town to buy a pack of football cards. The day couldn’t come soon enough.

The man asked Coop, “What would you like, kiddo?” Coop had asked his friends earlier in the week what pack he should get and they all told him the same thing - Amethyst. “I’ll take a pack of Amethyst.” His mom did not tell him, but she had picked up double shifts all month to afford one of these packs.

The day finally came and Coop was beaming. They walked in and he loved the clean, glass displays everywhere. An employee walked over and asked Coop how he could help him. Coop excitedly told him it was his birthday and that this was his first ever sports pack.

Coop slowly unwrapped the pack and opened it like his friends said. If there was a hit, it would be the last card. He saw a flash of red and quickly raced to the end of the pack. Coop had no idea what he had opened, but the employee lost his mind.
“Wow! That is a huge card! Here’s a sleeve and toploader, it is important to protect your card. The better condition you keep the card, the more valuable it will be. That is a Trae Carsons rookie auto, out of five, color- and jersey-match.” Coop looked confused and did not understand what the man was saying. His mom butt-in, “Well how much is it worth?”
The man said when a card comes out of a pack, it is called raw. “Raw, this is thousands. If you send in the card with ASP to get graded and it gems a perfect ten, you’re looking at tens of thousands. After that it would have to be auctioned.” Coop didn’t understand and had only one thing to say, “He plays for my rival team, though.”
Nearby a man was manically ripping an entire box of Amethyst. He had listened in on the conversation between Coop and the employee. After the employee went to go help a new customer, the man saw an opportunity.
“Hey kid, congratulations on your big pull! I was wondering if you wanted to trade, I pulled a monster card from your favorite team. I pulled a gold auto, one of one, Tim Brody rookie card. The lower the number, the more valuable the card is, and nothing beats gold one of ones.”
Coop had never heard of the player, but saw his favorite team, and was ready to trade. Coop’s mom interrupted, “How much is that card worth?” The man paused, looked up and gave a sly smile, “Priceless… it would have to be auctioned…” Coop’s mom asked Coop if he was OK with the trade, and before she could even finish her question, the two traded cards and shook hands.
Super excited with his new card, Coop ran up to the employee that helped him and showed him his new card, “Look what I traded for!” The employee looked over and turned white as a ghost.
“Who did you trade for that,” asked the employee? Coop went to point at the man, but he had already left. “What’s wrong,” asked Coop’s mom, “how much is that card worth?”
The man looked at her and said, “this card is only $100 raw. This is this year’s Mr. Irrelevant, which means he was the last picked player in the entire draft, he won’t even see play time.”
Coop felt like he could relate to Tim Brody even more now. “Is it still worth being graded?” his mom asked.
“Probably not, but I’m willing to send this in on the store’s behalf to get it graded for free for you because I feel so terrible. The good news is it looks like it could double gem - card and auto. Maybe you can get $200 for it after that." Coop cared about none of that, he liked his new card and would love to see it graded.
Coop’s card came back after a year, and even though it double-gemmed, Tim Brody had seen no play, and the card was now worth less than $50. Coop had lost interest in sports, football especially, after finally realizing what happened with the trade. Trae Carsons had made it to the superbowl at the end of his rookie season and a similar card of Coop’s was auctioned for $150,000 heading into the big game.
Years had passed, and one day before heading to college, Coop had received a phone call. “Good morning Coop, I don’t know if you remember me, but I worked at the card store you graded that Tim Brody card at. I was wondering if you still had it…? There is someone here who is offering to buy it for ten million dollars.”
In the time that had passed, Tim Brody had won six superbowls and was considered one of the greatest players of all time. He never lived up to his nickname - Mr. Irrelevant - and wrote his own story. Trae Carsons was injured in that rookie superbowl appearance and never saw the field again. You would be lucky to get $50 for his one of one card now.
