Rockland Ukulele Orchestra
Love You
Hey RUO! This song arrangement is a bit different than other songs that we've done, so here's a little crash course on some of the elements we'll be learning.
Happy Practicing!
- Autumn
First, decide which part below will work best for your skill level.
If you have never done picking before or you are brand new to the ukulele, the Bass Part might be the best option for you.
If you have done some picking and were able to do some the melodies we have learned in the past,
try out the Melody Part!
If you are familiar with picking or reading music and are looking for a bit more of a challenge (or if you have a low G string on your uke),
take a look at the Harmony Part.
*Note: each pdf has a version written in
music notation AND in tablature.
Use whichever is easier for you to read.
Second, let's review how to read tablature.
Each line on the tablature is one of the strings on the uke.
String 1 (A) is the top line.
String 2 (E) is the second line.
String 3 (C) is the third line.
String 4 (G) is the fourth line.

Each number on the tablature the fret you will use.
"0" is an open string (if 0 is on string 1, you would play that string without pressing down on any of the frets)
"1" - finger on the first fret.
"2" - finger on the second fret
"3" - finger on the third fret
And so on...

Pentatonic Scale Major C Scale
When we read tablature and play by picking individual strings, we are playing single notes, often in the form of a melody. When we play chords, we are playing several notes at the same time that combine to make a single harmonic sound.
For example, if you played the G B and D notes in the above diagram at the same time, you may notice that your fingers form the G chord. Isn't music amazing?!?!?!
Third, practice this simple melody line.
Each part plays this line in some way at some point in this song, so it's very important to know.
C G F G E G D G
This is musical notation.
Each line and space represents a pitch.

These bars represent the rhythm.
Long lines are long notes,
Short lines are short notes.
Practice Videos
Fourth, listen to the original version of this song a few times.
See if you can pick out the parts you have chosen! Our arrangement is a bit shorter and in a different key, but you may notice the same melody we learned earlier is repeated in several different ways throughout this song. Enjoy the listen!
And finally, try it out!
The score below has all of the parts playing together at the same time. You can read along with the score or pull up the pdf of the part you've chosen. The sliding bar in the middle changes the speed of the recording. Play as slow as you like as many times as you want from any point in the song.
Happy practicing!
*Ideally, we will play this together at 144 bpm, but we'll start off a little slower....

Lyrics
Melody starts
Give a little time for the child within you,
Don't be afraid to be young and free.
Undo the locks and throw away the keys
And take off your shoes and socks, and run you.
Bass and Alto enter
La la la la, la la la la
All play their parts together
Give a little time for the child within you,
Don't be afraid to be young and free.
Undo the locks and throw away the keys
And take off your shoes and socks, and run you.
Run through the meadow and scare up the milking cows (altos play harmony)
Run down the beach kicking clouds of sand
Walk a windy weather day, feel your face blow away
Stop and listen: Love you.
Roll like a circus clown, put away your circus frown
Ride on a roller coaster upside down
Waltzing Matilda, Carey loves a kinkatchoo
Joey catch a kangaroo, hug you.
Dandelion, milkweed, silky on a sunny sky (altos play harmony)
Reach out and hitch a ride and float on by
Balloons down below catching colors of the rainbow
Red, blue and yellow-green: I love you.
Altos take the melody, Bass and Melody switch "whee-oos"
Bicycles, tricycles, ice cream candy
Lollypops, popsicles, licorice sticks
Solomon Grundy, Raggedy Andy
Tweedledum and Tweedledee, home free.
Bass takes melody, Melody and Altos echo
Cowboys and Indians, puppydogs and sandpails
Beachballs and baseballs and basketballs, too.
All together, slower
I love forget-me-nots, fluffernutters, sugarpops (pause...)
I'll hug you and kiss you and love you
Bass starts, Melody and Altos layer in
La, la, la la la la…..
Love you.
