CREATIVE ARTS ACADEMY - GROUP CLASSES

SATURDAYS 

11am - 12noon (May 4th - June 22nd) SATURDAY MUSIC JAMMERS

Learn to play music with others in this fun music class! Sing together, learn to play a variety of percussion instruments and engage in fun educational music games. Build skills that will help you join a band.

MONDAYS April 22nd - June 24th ( 9 weeks) 

9:15 - 10:30am VIDEO EDITING LAB

This class is a great opportunity to work on video editing skills on our state-of-the-art computers. Participants will work on editing personal documentaries (from Wednesday 9:15am class) and on MFL TV Show (from Tuesday 12:45pm class) as well as on own projects.

Goals: Video shooting and editing and storytelling skills

10:45 - 12noon GRAPHIC NOVEL MAKING CLASS

Graphic novels tell stories with pictures, photos and images. Learn to make your own graphic novels and tell stories with art! Use drawing, painting and collage to tell your stories and make your story-books. Graphic novels made in this class will be made into short videos with voice over in the MFL TV Show Class!

Goals: Art skills, fine motor skills and self expression

12:45 - 2pm GROUP MUSIC MAKING CLASS

Build your group music making skills in this fun class! Participants will build their ability to maintain a steady beat, echo/copy simple rhythms and play a variety of percussion instruments in a group setting. This is a great class to reinforce skills needed to play in a band!

Goals: Music skills, communication and listening skills

5 - 5:45pm SMALL BAND CLASS - ongoing

Learn how to play in a band in this class with 3 - 4 participants. Learn how to start and stop a song, play in same tempo with others and share your music with the world! NOTE: Some prior musical skills required for this class so please check with Jeffrey.
Goals: Music skills, self expression and creativity.
Teacher: Autumn  $540 ($60 per class)

5:45-7pm PRE-PROFESSIONAL THEATER CLASS - Session 1 (must also sign up for Session 2 on Thursdays)

Spring focus for our pre-professional theater class is an exciting opportunity to act in a professionally produced SHREK, the musical! The show will be presented June 20 - 23. Shrek will be performed at Elmwood Playhouse in June 2024. NOTE: This class is limited to participants with prior training at Music For Life. We also have a Saturday musical theater class for participants who are still building their theater skills. See below.

Goals: Singing and acting skills and working together

9:15 - 10:30am “SPRING MOVES” DANCE CLASS:

Let's warmup up with some dancing! Learn some new dance moves as you start the day with some moving and grooving. Build skills in coordinating your body to music and build your repertoire of fun dances. This always popular class is fun, educational and exercise! 

Goals: Dance skills, exercise and cooperation

10:45 - 12noon OPEN ART STUDIO CLASS - ongoing
Express yourself with a variety of art mediums in this ever popular class. Paint, draw, make collage and sculpture! Each class starts with a short art lesson.

Goals: Art skills, self expression & communication

11am - 12noon SMALL GROUP MUSIC MAKING CLASS

Nothing is better than playing music together! Participants will learn the basics of making music in a group including playing together with a steady beat, group singing and movement to music. A variety of songs and musical activities will reinforce skills learned. Participants will learn to play bongos, congas, maracas, rhythms sticks and more. No prior skills necessary.

Goals: Music skills and self-expression

12:45 - 2pm MFL TV SHOW SEASON 3: Zoom Theme

This season of MFL’s own TV show will focus on the “Zoom TV Show” format. The show will be a combination of interactive fun songs, games and skits. Learn how to video, edit and produce a TV show. Participants will share their talents in front of and in back of the camera. Participants will learn technology that they can use at home to make their own videos. 

Goals: Videography, creativity and cooperation

2 - 2:45pm SMALL BAND CLASS  (Whatta Band) - ongoing

Learn how to play in a band in this class with 3 - 4 participants. Learn how to start and stop a song, play in same tempo with others and share your music with the world! NOTE: Some prior musical skills required for this class so please check with Jeffrey.
Goals: Music skills, self expression and creativity.

3:00-3:45pm ADULT SMALL GROUP ART CLASS - ongoing 
Learn how to use a variety of art mediums in this fun social class. Participants will learn to paint, draw and make collage. At the end of each class they will share what they have made with each other.

Goals: Art skills, sharing art and creativity

4:30-6:00pm ROCK BAND CLASS (The Rock 'n' Rollers) - ongoing

Learn how to play in a rock band! This fun class will help you learn how to sing and play instruments with other people. Bring your voice, guitar, bass, keyboard or other instrument and let’s rock!
Goals: Group music skills and working together

6 - 7:15pm ADULT MUSICAL THEATER CLASS Feb 6 - April 16th

Learn to act, sing and dance in a musical! This Winter's show is “Guys & Dolls".  The show is fun and touching and filled with great songs! The performance will be at a professional theater, Elmwood Playhouse, in Nyack on Friday April 19th.

Goals: Acting, singing and dancing skills

WEDNESDAY April 24th - June 26th (10 weeks)

 

9:15 - 10:30am DOCUMENTARY FILM CLASS - Personal documentaries

Make your own short documentaries! Learn how to tell short stories with video, editing and special effects. This class is led by professional filmmaker. Participants will learn how to use video equipment and how to tell a story! The short films will be screen in our own movie festival!

9:15 - 10:30am SET & PROP MAKING CLASS - for Shrek

Create small and BIG set pieces and props for our production of Shrek, the musical! You will learn how to transform a piece of cardboard into a castle and make books and flowers and other objects that will be used in our show. This is a fun and creative class. You will learn how to use a variety of materials and how to transform them into real-looking objects.

Goals: Painting, 3-D art and fine motor skills

10:45 - 12noon MFL ADULT SPRING CHORUS

Build your group singing skills in the ongoing MFL ADULT CHORUS. This is an always 

popular class! Focus this Spring will range from unison singing to 2 part singing to using percussion instruments during singing.

10:45 - 12noon SMALL GROUP PERFORMANCE LAB CLASS

NOTE: This class is for participants with advanced skill on a musical instrument. Participants will learn how to set up and perform in professional environments including farmer’s markets, senior centers and restaurants.

Goals: Performing skills, sound system set up and working together

WEDNESDAYS 12:45pm 2:00pm SHREKTIONAL PIT ORCHESTRA CLASS

Learn how to play music in a pit orchestra for a musical! Participants will actually perform in 4 performances of Shrek The Musical performed in June 2024 at Elmwood Playhouse. Build music reading skills, group music skills and performance skills.

Goals: Audio editing and conversational skills

12:45 - 2pm DJ CLASS

Learn to use a DJ board and lead fun dance and party activities. You will learn how to use our new DJ machine as well as motivate people to dance and have fun. Build your skills to be the life of the party! This is a fun social and active class.

Goals: DJ skills, technology and dance skills

4 - 4:55pm “SPRING FUN” DANCE CLASS:

It’s time to get down to some exciting dance songs! Dancing is good exercise and it’s also a great social activity. Knowing the moves to a couple of dances will make every party so much more fun!

Goals: Dance skills, balance and coordination and fun!

10:45am - 12noon SINGER-SONGWRITER CLASS - performance focus

Build your singer-songwriter skills in this always fun class. Learn how to write in a variety of styles and about many different themes. Build your personal singer-songwriter show!

Learn to use a variety of medium to express yourself and make art! Each class starts with a short lesson. Great for beginners who want to build skills and advanced artists who want to work on their own projects.

Work in-depth on a variety of fun songs in the Jamming Class! Have fun playing many different songs with each other. Try out songs as a duo, trio or quartet! This is a great class to experiment with different instruments.
